ABOUT US

Our History

We started our great adventure back in 1990, to connect with all the world travellers coming to the Grand Bazaar, the oldest shopping mall in the world (founded in 1461). The uniqueness of our store front and the display of our outstanding pieces of hanging ceramic ornaments has received great recognition. With this acclaim we are the most photographed shop among all the 2500 shops within the Bazaar.

We are continuously creating and improving our craft, to provide more diversity to the eclectic cultures that come and visit Istanbul; discovering new cultures and forming strong bonds is the biggest joy and we are fortunate this friendship has carried on to different countries of the world.

Back in 1990, there were many ceramic shops in the Grand Bazaar, but nothing that was exciting or new. That was when we wanted to get the world traveler’s attention and do something unique. We succeeded, that is when we started to create an arrangement of lovely hanging ceramic spheres, all hand painted and made in Turkey.

Our range and collection cannot be found anywhere else. We are in a mission to develop and expand the traditional classical patterns into designs that have never been seen before, from the smallest ceramic sphere that can be used as Christmas ornaments to large decorative statement pieces. Not to mention beautiful handmade backgammon sets that specialize in inlaid mother of pearl.

For years, the feedback from our products have been exceptional, we love what we do, and we are passionate to show how our little shop with soul embraces people from all different cultures.

Product Knowledge

The story behind the hanging ceramic ornaments date back to the 16th-century ceramic artwork that can be classified into three groups; tiles, utensils, and decorative objects. Hanging ornaments amongst the third group.

The Ottoman’s displayed these splendid ornaments in homes as well as mosques as decorative pieces. The spheres are actually displayed upside-down, stabilized by a support in an opening at its top, so its decorated bottom- half faces upward for easy viewing. The design consists of garden scenes with embellished Tulips and Carnations. All our products are handcrafted, therefore each piece is unique to itself.

We work with 3 special workshops and 5 masters in Turkey to create these beautiful ornaments, the ceramicists work on average 10 hours to produce one sphere. The decorative spheres are made from  fritware (also known as stone paste), and the artists create extravagant naturalistic representation of spring gardens. A transparent glaze is applied on the ceramic, then fired, after completion the sphere acquires a glossy finish.

Finally, the ceramic spheres are attached to a chain and then oxidized, later copper and wood beads are attached. These workshops solely work for our shop, therefore, our patterns are unique and our workmanship is of the highest quality. It is with this mutual trust and respect we have been collaborating with the same workshops for decades.
